Description
The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) operates in conjunction with the CrIS to profile atmospheric temperature and moisture. Higher (spatial, temporal and spectral) resolution and more accurate sounding data from CrIS and ATMS will support continuing advances in data assimilation systems and NWP models to improve short- to medium-range weather forecasts.
ATMS consists of a microwave radiometer that:
- Measures microwave radiances at 22 channels (23.8 GHz to 183.3 GHz)
- Measures total-power, two-point external calibration
Heritage
- ATMS is the functional-equivalent follow-on to AMSU-A (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit) and MHS (Microwave Humidity Sounder) with improved sampling and coverage

Description
The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) is the first in a series of advanced operational sounders that will provide more accurate, detailed atmospheric temperature and moisture observations for weather and climate applications. This information will help significantly improve climate prediction and both short-term weather “nowcasting” and longer-term forecasting.
Measures upwelling infrared radiance at very high spectral resolution
- 1,305 spectral channels (SWIR: 3.92-4.64µm; MWIR: 5.71-8.26µm; LWIR: 9.14-15.38µm) at nominal mode (NSR), with resolution at 0.625, 1.25, and 2.5 cm-1for the LWIR, MWIR, SWIR bands, respectively
- 2211 spectral channels at full spectral resolution (FSR) mode, with resolution at 0.625 cm-1for all three bands.
- Low noise levels (NEdN)
- Much finer resolution for improved vertical soundings increasing both radiometric and spectral accuracy
- Data is combined with ATMS to produce vertical profiles of the temperature, moisture, and pressure
- Typical temperature retrieval accuracy well below 1K

- Fields of Regard each 3 x 3 FOVs
- Photovoltaic Detectors in all 3 bands
- 4-Stage Passive Detector Cooler

Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)
Description:
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) has multi-band imaging capabilities to support the acquisition of high-resolution atmospheric imagery and generation of a variety of applied products including visible and infrared imaging of hurricanes and detection of fires, smoke, and atmospheric aerosols.
VIIRS provides operational and research users with:
- Spectral coverage from 412 nm to 12 μm in 22 bands
- Imagery at ~375 m nadir resolution in 5 bands
- Moderate resolution (~750 m at nadir) radiometric quality data

- Cloud and aerosol physical properties
- Land & ocean biosphere properties, snow & ice
- Sea Surface Temperature, Land & Ice Temperatures
- Fire detection
- Imagery
Note: Sensor-order RSRs follow a detector numbering scheme that follows pre- launch protocol. For sensor-order RSRs, Detector 1 leads in the track direction and Detector 16 (32) trails in the track direction. For product- order RSRs, however, Detector 16 (32) leads in the track direction and Detector 1 trails in the track direction.

Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS)

Description:
Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) measures the concentration of ozone in the atmosphere, providing information on how ozone concentration varies with altitude. Data from OMPS continues three decades of climate measurements of this important parameter used in global climate models. The OMPS measurements also fulfill the U.S. treaty obligation to monitor global ozone concentrations with no gaps in coverage.
OMPS consists of three spectrometers:
- Nadir Total Column Spectrometer Provides Total Column ozone data with 50×50 km resolution at nadir
- Nadir Profile Spectrometer provides ozone profiles in a single ground pixel of 250×250 km at nadir from SNPP; 5 ground pixel of 50×50 km at nadir from JPSS-1
- Limb Sensor provides 1 km vertical sampling along three slits enabling ozone profile retrieval (Not on J1)
