Himawari-8 Basics

Himawari-8 started operation at 02 UTC on 7 July 2015. Operational information is here

The first images of Himawari-8 are released on 18 Dec 2014. Please look at http://www.jma.go.jp/jma/jma-eng/satellite/news/himawari89/20141218_himawari8_first_images.html.

Himawari-8 was successfully launched on 7 October 2014 and entered geostationary orbit on 16 October 2014 as planned.

Himawari-8 Data Formats and Volumes

All the distributed/disseminated Himawari-8/9 data are summarized at http://www.data.jma.go.jp/mscweb/en/himawari89/space_segment/spsg_sample.html . This table provides sample data based on actual Himawari-8 observation.
As for the AHI Proxy data, it was calculated from NWP model data which has far coarser spatial resolution than actual atmosphere. So, the data volume could not be same as operational data theoretically. Please note that AHI proxy data volume is smaller than actual observation.
HRIT file data described in this section will be used in dissemination via a communication satellite. This configuration is described in this figure http://www.data.jma.go.jp/mscweb/en/himawari89/fig/Overview_of_data_distribution.png.

Also, details of HimawariCast service including the specification of user reception systems can be found at http://www.data.jma.go.jp/mscweb/en/himawari89/himawari_cast/himawari_cast.html. HimawariCloud and HimawariCast pages will be updated with further information accordingly.
JMA is also providing Himawari-8 data in SATAID format as JMA’s GISC portal service. You can see the details of this service at http://www.wis-jma.go.jp/cms/sataid/ and also you can download SATAID files and viewer program from this link. This SATAID service is provided for registered NMHSs.
Current JDDS service users can continuously receive the HRIT files. The information is here.

Himawari-8 Training and Resources

The Melbourne VLab Centre of Excellence hosted by the Bureau of Meteorology has announced an extensive training campaign for Himawari-8/9 users. The campaign is conducted in cooperation with JMA and starts at the end of January 2015, providing web training sessions as well as self-study training material to support Himawari-8/9 user preparations. All information about the training campaign, including registration of web training sessions, is found at http://www.virtuallab.bom.gov.au/training/hw-8-training/ . On the Comet Meted site, you will find a training module on Himawari-8: “Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI): What is Different from the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI)” (online registration needed). The module is highly relevant to all users of Himawari-8. At the occasion of the 6th Asia-Oceanic Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference in Japan in November 2015, a training event on Himawari-8 data utilization is planned.
