EUMETSAT is a partner in the Virtual Laboratory for Training and Education in Satellite Meteorology (VLab)<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0 the global network of specialized training centres and meteorological satellite operators works together to improve the utilization of data and products from meteorological and environmental satellites, which is supported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS).<\/p>

We work closely with the training centres, Centres of Excellence<\/a><\/span> in Oman<\/a><\/span>, Casablanca, Niger<\/a><\/span>, Kenya<\/a><\/span> and South Africa<\/a><\/span>. In supporting these Centres of Excellence, EUMETSAT works with the centres to make sure they have access to data, and helps them to develop expertise in the use of current and future satellite data. We have a long history supporting training and development outside Europe \u2014 the first course in Africa was organized two decades ago.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces \u2013 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation’s Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

There are currently a total of 30 member states that are a part of EUMETSAT, and the organisation continues to grow. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

EUMETSAT\u2019s vision is to be the leading user-driven operational agency in Europe for Earth observation satellite programmes that fulfil the objectives of its Convention. It further aims to be a trusted global partner for those outside Europe who share these objectives. In realising this vision, EUMETSAT\u2019s first priority shall be to fulfil the essential requirements of its member states in terms of observations, data and support services for operational weather as well as Earth system monitoring and forecasting for climate services. EUMETSAT currently operates the Meteosat Second Generation<\/a><\/span><\/u>\u00a0(MSG) satellites -10 and -11 in geostationary orbit (36,000km) over Europe and Africa, and Meteosat-9 over the Indian Ocean. The first Meteosat Third Generation<\/a><\/span><\/u>\u00a0(MTG) satellite, Meteosat-12, is now operational in geostationary orbit covering Europe and Africa and surrounding seas. The new generation MTG satellites are Europe\u2019s most advanced geostationary meteorological satellites. In addition to the Flexible Combined Imager instrument, they carry the Lightning Imager instrument, which provides continuous, near-real time data that can be used to detect, monitor, and track lightning. This is the first time a geostationary weather satellite has the capability to detect lightning data across a broad area over Europe, Africa, and the surrounding oceans. MTG will also provide observations of vertical temperature and humidity profiles, at temporal and spatial scales previously unavailable, through MTG-S sounding satellite. MTG satellites will ensure that Meteosat\u2019s valuable contribution to global monitoring of weather, atmosphere and oceans will continue into the 2040s.<\/u><\/u><\/p>

EUMETSAT also operates Europe\u2019s Metop<\/a><\/span><\/u>-B and \u2013C polar orbit satellites, which circle the globe via the poles and continuously collect data from an altitude of 817 km. The new EUMETSAT Polar System \u2013 Second Generation<\/a><\/span><\/u>\u00a0(EPS-SG) programme will bring global observations of weather and climate from polar orbit to a new standard with the launch of the first EPS-SG satellite in 2025. \u00a0Metop-SG satellites will provide high resolution observations of temperature, precipitation, clouds, winds, sea ice, aerosols, pollution, soil moisture, volcanic dust, and a multitude of other parameters.<\/u><\/u><\/p>

In addition, EUMETSAT is responsible for operating the Copernicus Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6 ocean monitoring satellites and Jason-3 satellite operating in low Earth orbit at 1336km altitude.\u00a0<\/p>
